BRICS countries sign memorandum of understanding on sports

The group values the importance of sports governance, transparency and the protection of athletes

This Thursday, the sports ministers of the BRICS countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation in physical culture and sports together with public policies that promote social inclusion, well-being, health and economic development.

The holder of Brazil's ministerial sports portfolio, André Fufuca, the agreement highlights the transformative role of sport in society. “Sport is an instrument for the development, inclusion and union of peoples,” he added.

The official emphasized the Brazilian Athlete Scholarship program, which provides financial support to more than 10,000 athletes. In 2025, 176 million reais (nearly 31.06 million U.S. dollars) were invested in this program.

He also highlighted the importance of sports governance, transparency and the protection of athletes. Meanwhile, representatives of countries such as Ethiopia and South Africa pointed out the impact of sport on peace, as well as on social cohesion and the generation of opportunities.
