The member countries of the BRICS bloc consolidated their strategic cooperation mechanisms in the field of public health, with the objective of expanding access to cutting-edge health technologies throughout the Global South. This international alliance seeks to optimize the joint development of essential supplies and highly complex equipment, establishing a reliable internal circuit that is independent of global geopolitical tensions.

The initiative responds to the need to advance the medical and scientific sovereignty of emerging nations, ensuring the timely provision of treatments for the population.

Among the tangible achievements of this mechanism, the BRICS Center for Vaccine Research and Development, established in March 2022, stands out, which is actively working to create doses against tropical fevers in Marburg, Lassa and West Nile.

In addition, the association has a network dedicated to the study of tuberculosis and a Special Working Group focused on the production of innovative radiological drugs. In this regard, the expert Margarita Isaakova specified that “today, the interaction of BRICS countries in the production of medical technologies is no longer just a set of diplomatic memoranda, but a system that works perfectly”.

The exchange of scientific and human resources focuses on areas of strategic value such as cellular technologies, personalized medicine, nuclear medicine and the fight against antimicrobial resistance. In this scheme, each of the founding nations provides specific industrial capacities to accelerate joint developments.

China and India stand out for their enormous productive potential, with the Indian market being a leader in affordable generics and the Asian giant a leader in medical software and artificial intelligence systems.

For its part, Brazil incorporates into the alliance its tradition in public health systems, the use of state laboratories and an advanced school in medical device engineering. This offer is directly complemented by Russia's historic strength in nuclear medicine and radiopharmaceutical development.

Additionally, the Republic of South Africa functions as a natural bridge to the African continent, providing a robust clinical infrastructure to optimize the research and validation phases of new technologies.
