This Sunday, the BRICS Summit began in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, bringing together heads of state, ministers and delegations from member and allied countries of the emerging economy block.

From the Museum of Modern Art (MAM), the meeting seeks to strengthen the political coordination of a block that has grown and is currently presenting itself as an alternative to traditional structures of global power.

During the opening of the National Development Bank conference, the president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, denounced the impact of policies imposed by Western financial institutions, according to international media.

“The austerity demanded by financial institutions has impoverished countries (...). That's what's happening in today's world and that's what we have to change,” he said, while insisting on creating a new currency for international trade that breaks the dependence on the dollar.

The meeting is attended, among others, by the Prime Minister of China, Li Qiang, and the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, while President Vladimir Putin joins the meeting electronically. Iran, a country recently joined the bloc, is seeking political support after recent attacks by the United States (US) and Israel.

The discussions also include the creation of a global health alliance, a fair climate finance strategy, and new rules for the ethical use of artificial intelligence. The Summit will culminate this Monday, July 7, with the signing of the final declaration.
