CELARG will open its doors to present an anthology of Afro-Venezuelan poetry

The conversation surrounding the work will include interventions by editor María Mercedes Cobo and professor Mariana Álvarez

Afro-Venezuelan poetry. The first anthology is a confluence and meeting of poems, thought and presence of the art of self-recognized women as black and Afro-Venezuelan”, explains María Mercedes Cobo, co-editor of the work that will be presented on Monday, May 19, 2025, starting at 10:00 a.m. at the headquarters of Librería del Sur, at the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies Rómulo Gallegos (CELARG).

The edition by Laura Cárdenas Armas and María Mercedes Cobo Echenagucia includes a prologue written by the Afro-Puerto Rican poet, writer and academic, Mayra Santos Febres. The epilogue was written by the Afro-Cuban academic, Rosa Campoalegre. Both are women with backgrounds in Afro-black teaching and research in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The work includes four essays, by Meyby Ugeto-Ponce, Beatriz Montenegro, Mariana Álvarez and Sandra Angeleri. The Afro-Venezuelan creator who illustrated the cover is Wiki Pirela, a plastic and visual artist. The editorial designer is the Mexican Ana Jimena Sánchez. Twenty-four poets participate with their texts. Among them are Carmen Verde Arocha, Celsa Acosta, Beatriz Aiffil, Angimar Batista, Eileen Rada and Merlyn Pirela.

The conversation surrounding the work will include interventions by editor María Mercedes Cobo and professor Mariana Álvarez, researcher, creator and teacher of the Master's Degree in Women's Studies at the Central University of Venezuela (UCV). Next, Ana Gloria Palma, Gladys Quiroga and Ligia Álvarez, writers participating in the anthology, will read their texts.
