The National Center for Cocoa Research, Development and Innovation (CENIDIC), an agency attached to the Ministry of Popular Power for Science and Technology (MINCYT), leads the process of genetic improvement of cacao in Venezuela called directed pollination.
In this regard, Bruth Linares González, executive director of CENIDIC, stated that the technique has more than 20 years of study and multiple tests, and with it they seek to obtain the best genetic conditions for crops, focusing on resistance to pests and diseases, adaptation to the environment, increasing production and maintaining the quality of Venezuelan cocoa, details a press release from the ministerial portfolio.
He also explained that this process involves finding father and mother plants that have good characteristics that they want to reproduce in the new generation.
“Pollen is taken from the flowers of a parent variety and fertilized in the flowers of the trees that will serve as mother. With this technique, it is guaranteed that the resulting hybrid has the desired characteristics,” he said.
