The Minister of People's Power for Foreign Affairs, Yván Gil, during his speech this Tuesday at the High-Level Segment of the Conference on Disarmament, in Geneva (Switzerland), highlighted the importance of this multilateral body transcending paralysis and moving towards a concrete result. “The reduction of arsenals not only reduces global risk, but it also makes it possible to reallocate resources to areas essential for the well-being of peoples,” he said, adding that in “a nuclear conflict there will be no winners. The existence of nuclear weapons constitutes the denial of life on our planet.” In this regard, he demanded, on behalf of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, the total elimination of nuclear weapons and the destruction of their arsenals, while urging “member States to reaffirm their relevant commitment to the application of the disarmament and non-proliferation architecture”. In addition, the foreign minister expressed concern about the “sustained increase in military spending on a global scale and the acceleration of the arms race, in a clear retreat in disarmament and non-proliferation efforts”, while noting that this increase deepens the gap between possessing and non-possessing States”. “The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, faithful to its Bolivarian Diplomacy of Peace, reaffirms its historic position in favor of general and complete disarmament, as a fundamental priority” and “reiterates the importance of the mandate of the Conference on Disarmament as a multilateral forum for the negotiation of a legally binding instrument in the field of disarmament and arms control,” he concluded.
