The Minister of Popular Power for Foreign Affairs, Yván Gil, during the Conference on the Territorial Dispute surrounding Guiana Essequiba, assured that Venezuela has historically demonstrated its belonging to that territory.
From the Teresa Carreño Theater, he highlighted the work of collecting documents and the “solid legal strategy deployed by the Venezuelan State to demonstrate, with irrefutable arguments before the international community, the legitimate rights of the nation over the territory of Guiana Esequiba (...) is a legal and historical truth that no one can refute,” said the diplomat.
He also congratulated the legal team that represented Venezuela in the recent appearance before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), in The Hague, and assured that this defense “was not only novel, but will constitute a reference and an example of doctrine for the chair of international law in the future.”
With regard to the upcoming ICJ decision, the diplomat reiterated the words of the president in charge, Delcy Rodríguez, “based on the principle of sovereignty and with deep respect for the institutions of the Court, with deep respect for international law and with deep respect for the judges who make up the Court.” Venezuela has made it clear that this judicial body has no jurisdiction or competence to decide on this territorial dispute.
Finally, he emphasized that the Geneva Agreement is the only legal way to resolve this dispute and that it is a path in accordance with international law.
