The Confederation of Students of Chile (CONFECH) reported this Wednesday that it had been the victim of police repression during a mobilization carried out in the streets of Santiago. The student union expressed its rejection of recent state budgetary adjustments, which, according to the organization's spokesman, Diego Torres, cause a precarious state of public services.

In the context of the protest, Torres also rejected a so-called government “mega-reform”, which he described as a “hidden tax reform” that, in his opinion, “seeks to fiscally secure the country for 25 years” for the benefit of large economic groups. The student leader argued that these measures respond to interests far from priority social needs.

On the other hand, CONFECH expressed deep concern about the official initiative called “Protected Schools”. According to the spokesperson, this program imposes “punitive measures” within educational communities, without addressing or offering real solutions to the structural problems faced by the current education system.
