Chileans rejected with 55.76% of the vote the proposal for a new Constitution drawn up by the Constitutional Council, in the constitutional plebiscite held this Sunday, December 17, the Russia Today website reported.

He specifies that the “against” won with 96.30% of the tables counted, compared to 44.24% of the “in favor” in the Chilean vote.

It also highlights that this is the second plebiscite to take place in just 15 months, with the intention of replacing the Constitution that still governs the country and which is a legacy of the Augusto Pinochet dictatorship.

It is a mirror process, since in September of last year, a draft drafted by a Constitutional Convention that had a majority of progressive or left-wing members was submitted for consultation, and which was rejected by the right and extreme right.

In the end, a resounding 61.8% of the population voted against the proposal, which represented a political defeat for President Gabriel Boric, who had only been in office for six months.

Now, on the other hand, the draft was prepared by a Constitutional Council that has a majority of militants from the right and extreme right, and which is criticized by left-wing or progressive groups, including the ruling party.

The common denominator between the two processes is that there was no consensus, no middle ground, no balances, or agreements. If today, unlike last year, he wins the vote in favor, Boric will have to enact a Constitution with which he does not agree. But if the vote against succeeds, there will no longer be a third process and the current Magna Carta will remain in force.

In the midst of the “against” option leading the vote, the president of the opposition Independent Democratic Union (UDI) political party, Javier Macaya, who is “in favor”, declared: “Today we are going to sleep in peace”.

“Tomorrow is going to be a better day for Chile,” said Alberto Undurraga, president of Christian Democracy, who is also in favor of this option.

For his part, the senator and president of the Democratic Revolution, Juan Ignacio Latorre, pointed out that it is important that Chilean citizens “have transversally rejected the proposal for a constitution drawn up by the Republicans and the right.”
