Geng Shuang, Deputy Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations (UN), urged to promote the cessation of hostilities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to eradicate violence between armed groups.

During a UN Security Council briefing on the peacekeeping mission in the DRC (MONUSCO), Geng emphasized the urgency of addressing the conflict in the African country.

The new Government of the DRC came to power without setbacks last month, marking a new chapter in the country. China welcomes this development and hopes that all parties will come together to accelerate national construction and achieve peace and stability through the Government's National Plan of Action, as published by the Xinhua website.

Geng also noted the recent violence that left more than 500 civilians killed by armed groups in the past three months, and 7.3 million people were forcibly displaced.

He condemned the attack on a Chinese company in the DRC on July 3, demanding that those responsible be arrested and brought to justice. In addition, he urged all armed groups to lay down their arms and withdraw from occupied areas immediately.
