The Minister of Foreign Affairs of China, Wang Yi, this Monday, October 27, reaffirmed the central role of the Global South in the urgent reform of the global governance system, advocating greater representation and influence for these nations in international decisions.

During his speech at the twenty-third Lanting Forum, called “Implementation of the Global Governance Initiative for a Community of Shared Future for Humanity”, the foreign minister stressed that the collective rise of developing countries is a “historic transformation” and that these nations must be protagonists, not observers, in the restructuring of the world order.

In a review of the Telesur website, Wang Yi emphasized that the reform of the international system must reflect changes in the world economy and respond to the demands of the nations of the South for equity and justice.

To correct the current democratic deficit in economic governance, China proposed concrete measures, including increasing the voice of Africa and other developing regions in the United Nations Security Council.

Additionally, the minister proposed adjustments to the quotas of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and to the actions of the World Bank.

He also expressed support for a more active role for emerging financial institutions such as the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and the New BRICS Development Bank, in addition to noting that these entities constructively complement the existing global financial system.

Yi stressed that strengthening the Global South must be accompanied by practical cooperation in vital areas such as technological innovation, trade and the green transition.

In this regard, he recalled that China offers zero tariff treatment for 100% of products from African nations and least developed countries, and pledged to share development opportunities.

Wang Yi reiterates that the “Global Governance Initiative” proposed by the president of the Asian giant, Xi Jinping, seeks to build a more just, balanced and inclusive system, based on sovereign equality, multilateral cooperation and respect for international law.

Along the same lines, it rejects “harassment of the small and weak”, while “demanding an equal and uniform application of international law and norms and is opposed to imposing its own internal norms on others”.

He also pointed out that “today's world is witnessing more than 50 ongoing conflicts of various types, with more than 100 million people displaced. Such a world, marked by transformation and turbulence, needs stronger global governance more than ever.

The Chinese foreign minister concluded that Beijing “will work together with the countries of the Global South to promote a gradual and sustained reform of the international system, so that it better reflects the multipolar reality of the world.”
