The President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, appointed Jorge Iván Ospina as his first ambassador to the State of Palestine, a year after ordering the opening of the diplomatic headquarters in Ramallah.

In a decree published on Monday, dated May 22, it states that “the Government of the State of Palestine welcomed the appointment of Mr. Jorge Iván Ospina Gómez as extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador of Colombia” in that country.

This measure was registered by Decree 0548 of 2025, signed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Laura Sarabia, and marks the beginning of Colombian diplomatic functions in Palestinian territory through an embassy based in Ramallah.

The appointment represents a concrete step in consolidating President Petro's foreign policy towards Western Asia, especially in strengthening relations with Palestine.
