The government of Gustavo Petro in Colombia, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, demanded that Peru release two fellow citizens held on the island of Santa Rosa, located in the Amazon River.
The Foreign Ministry described the arrest as “irregular” and carried out by “de facto Peruvian authorities imposed on the area unilaterally.”
Colombia does not recognize Peru's sovereignty over this river formation, which emerged after the binational assignment of 1929. The island, located in the triple border area with Brazil, is the subject of a long-standing territorial dispute.
He also expressed deep concern about the arrest of the two compatriots, who were in the immediate vicinity of Santa Rosa. According to the official statement, citizens were carrying out technical studies for the expansion of the Victoria Regia pier in Leticia, capital of the department of Amazonas.
