This Wednesday, Colombia's National Intelligence Directorate (DNI) described as “false and unfounded” the recent allegations made by lawyer and presidential candidate Abelardo De La Espriella.
The political leader had publicly denounced the existence of an alleged plan to attempt on his life, in which both officials of the national Government and agents of the intelligence agency would be involved.
Through an official statement, the entity categorically rejected the accusations and maintained that its work is strictly limited to strategic intelligence. The institution emphasized that its structure does not have operational capacities or armed powers to carry out actions of the nature denounced by the candidate, thus denying any participation in illegal activities or persecution.
The agency stressed that its functions are focused on gathering information for national security under the framework of the law. In this regard, the DNI urged that complaints of this type be channeled through the competent authorities to avoid disinformation and the discrediting of State institutions in the midst of the current political landscape.
For its part, the presidential candidate's team has stated that it will keep alerts about his personal safety while the relevant investigations are carried out. The situation occurs in a context of high institutional tension, where the intelligence agency seeks to dissociate itself from any controversy that could compromise the transparency of its work and the stability of the current electoral process.
