Thousands of citizens joined the commemorative events for the 215th anniversary of Colombia's independence this Sunday, which were led by President Gustavo Petro and focused on the resort of Santa Marta, in the Caribbean, a setting from which the head of state called for social justice, historical memory and national unity.

“The cry of independence is not heard, but it comes true in the hands and the popular decision,” said the president, referring to the struggles of the oppressed two centuries ago and the coming to power of a popular government.

A military ceremony took place in the department of Magdalena (north) in which 1,500 troops and armed forces participated. Along with Petro and members of his Cabinet, there were also senior military officers and representatives of the Diplomatic Corps, and other guests.

At the same time, the president called for national unity and for unifying wills in order to build a country with justice and freedom despite differences. “Today, the Constitution is synonymous with the Social State of Law, equality and social equity.”
