Colombia: The security of the judge responsible for the ruling against Uribe is reinforced

The National Protection Unit (UNP) announced this Tuesday that it reinforced the security scheme of Judge Sandra Liliana Heredia Aranda, responsible for the ruling that found the father of Colombian paramilitarism Álvaro Uribe Vélez guilty of the crimes of procedural fraud and bribery in criminal proceedings.

The request for protection had been submitted on February 11 of this year, and after a joint risk analysis with the National Police, additional measures were taken to protect their physical and functional integrity.

On July 28, the verdict was read out after 475 days of judicial proceedings. In her speech, the magistrate emphasized that “justice does not kneel before power”, and that this is one of the most significant moments in the recent history of the Colombian judicial system.

Although the simple bribery charge was dismissed, the judge determined that the telephone interceptions recorded in 2018 are valid, considering that their origin was accidental and that the former president's defense failed to prove that they were protected communications under the client-lawyer relationship
