The International Committee for the Freedom of Jorge Glas warned about the physical weakening and health effects of the former vice-president of Ecuador (2013-2018), attributed to his prolonged detention.

Through the social network X, the organization reported that prison conditions compromise its integrity, while a new judicial process is being initiated against it.

The Committee, composed of figures from different countries who promote his release, noted that the new cause seeks to prevent his release.

“We warn the international community, academics and legal experts about these actions that violate fundamental principles of international law in the area of human rights,” the group said.

According to what was published on the Sputnik website, on Friday, a hearing in Quito against Glas and two former officials of the government of Rafael Correa (2007-2017) was suspended. The case investigates alleged embezzlement related to the Manabí Reconstruction Committee, created after the 2016 earthquake.

According to the accusation, Glas would have taken decisions without consultation or approval from other members of the organization, promoting projects that are not priority for the emergency.

The process will continue on June 17, the date established after the request for a psychiatric examination for the former vice president. Glas, transferred from the maximum security prison “La Roca” to the capital, must appear at the new hearing.
