The President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, called before the United Nations for the creation of a Working Group within the Human Rights Council dedicated to addressing unilateral coercive measures. The initiative seeks to establish a formal space to analyze the impact of these sanctions on the development and fundamental rights of affected nations.
During his speech, the Cuban president called for the adoption of a legally binding international instrument that requires the immediate lifting of such measures. This proposal includes mechanisms for the accountability of responsible States, in order to curb what Havana qualifies as illegal external pressures.
Díaz-Canel reaffirmed his government's trust in multilateralism and diplomacy as the only legitimate ways to achieve peace and sustainable development. The Cuban leader emphasized that respect for sovereignty must be the central axis of international relations within the framework of the United Nations (UN).
Finally, the president thanked the international solidarity and global support against the economic blockade that the island is suffering. He assured that, despite pressure, the Cuban people will maintain their determination to defend their sovereignty and their right to choose their own political and social path.
