The celebration of San Juan Bautista in 2026 will be different, this year in addition to the traditional drums, demonstrations of faith and the gathering of parishioners from several coastal towns, the cultivators seek to have a thousand colorful flags, which will accompany the saint and his devotees in Ocumare de la Costa de Oro in Aragua.
This initiative of the cultivators of the Aragueña town seeks to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood, faith and tradition between the devotees of San Juan, as well as to pay homage to the saint who is celebrated every June 24 on the coast of the entity and whose day was declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2021.
Luis Lovera, the author behind the proposal, explained that “A Thousand Flags for San Juan has several objectives. The first is to expand the heritage of each of the groups of Sanjuaneros that live in the territory of Ocumare de la Costa de Oro, since they will be distributed based on their population.”
In that regard, he added that the flags will be delivered the day before to be used on June 24. “We have the presence of San Juan in Cata, Cumboto, Las Monjas, Cuyagua, El Playón and the central part of the town of Ocumare,” he said.
Lovera explained that the initiative was born from the hands of the area's cultivators, who for many years have been responsible for maintaining this ancient tradition. For people interested in supporting the Creole cultural proposal, they can do it with elaborate flags or their materials.
“The flags are used to clear the path to the saint in his path, besides they represent the ancient color, purity and their wave represents good energy. Traditionally, tree branches were used, but it evolved. They can be of any color red, white, blue, green, yellow and if they are printed with flowers or butterflies that are significant for Saint John the Baptist,” he said.
Those interested can go to the Casa de la Cultura de Ocumare de la Costa de Oro and the collection centers dedicated for this purpose in Maracay, La Victoria, Cagua in the state of Aragua, Miranda and Caracas or obtain information by calling 04124955117.
