More than three thousand delegates from 63 countries gathered in Caracas to participate in the World Congress in Defense of Mother Earth, an event that served as a prelude to the COP30 climate meeting scheduled for November in Brazil.
During the days of Thursday and Friday, the participants agreed that COP30 will be the stage to demand historic climate justice in response to what they consider to be an environmental crisis caused by the dominant economic system.
“We denounce that the Capitalocene, that system that commodifies life, has generated an irreversible metabolic fracture, turning rivers, forests and living beings into commodities (raw materials), delegates said in a statement released by the Minister of Ecosocialism, Ricardo Molina, through Telegram.
Far from asking for concessions, the representatives stated that they will not ask for “crumbs” from those who caused the “capitalist climate collapse”, but that they will present concrete alternatives.
“Our horizon is ecosocialism: a model that subordinates the economy to the cycles of nature, recognizes the rights of Mother Earth, including the legal personification of the Orinoco and the typification of ecocide, and prioritizes regeneration over capitalist sustainability,” they added.
Among the main demands, the payment of historic ecological debt by the global north stood out, not as charity, but as compulsory reparation.
Ahead of COP30, delegates announced that they will present a comprehensive proposal that promotes the “strategic alliance between ancient knowledge and critical science to protect biodiversity, ecosystems, practice agroecology, implement community early warning systems, the creation of nurseries, intensive reforestation”.
The Congress also agreed to promote the strategic alliance between ancient knowledge and critical science, to protect biodiversity, ecosystems, practice agroecology, implement community early warning systems, the creation of nurseries, and intensive reforestation.
As part of its final resolutions, the creation of the International Movement of Peoples in Defense of Peace, Humanity and Mother Earth was established, with the objective of unifying the global south, demanding the penalization of predatory transnational corporations and encouraging concrete actions from popular organizations.
“The solution is not in carbon markets or in “greenwashing”, it is in the permanent popular mobilization that already sows a future in the communes, defends territories from extractivism and weaves a new metabolic relationship with Mother Earth,” the delegates concluded.
This international meeting positions Caracas as a key point in the articulation of ecosocial proposals that seek to influence global decisions about the future of the planet.
