Devastating flood on the border between Nepal and China leaves more than 1,200 dead and 4,700 missing

One week after the devastating flood that occurred on August 26 in the border area between Nepal and the People's Republic of China, the authorities of both nations count more than 1,225 people dead and 4,757 missing, in what they describe as the largest natural disaster on record in the area.

In Nepalese territory, the National Authority for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management reported 1,204 dead and 4,216 missing, including 583 foreign citizens. In the face of the emergency, more than 21,000 troops remain deployed in the northern and central regions of the country, managing to rescue nearly 12,000 people.

For its part, the Government of the Chinese region of Tibet confirmed 21 fatalities and 541 unlocated persons in Gyirong County, of whom 261 are foreigners. Rescue work continues in isolated areas due to serious damage to access roads and local infrastructure.

The meteorological phenomenon generated an untimely increase of between 15 and 18 meters in the Trishuli riverbed, devastating 72 kilometers of population settlements in its path. In addition, the force of water completely destroyed the Rasuwagadhi-Kerung border crossing, a key point for bilateral trade.
