Earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.2 shakes Panama and is felt strongly in areas of Colombia

A preliminary magnitude 7.2 earthquake shook part of the territory of Panama this Friday, causing alarm among the population and being perceived with great intensity in several regions of the north and west of neighboring Colombia. Authorities activated a tsunami alert, Telesur said on Telegram.
Geological monitoring agencies recorded the earthquake with an epicenter in Panamanian territory and shallow depth, while preliminary evaluations began in urban centers close to the impact zone.
“We are deploying technical evaluation commissions and inspecting priority infrastructures to rule out serious damage and address any eventuality in affected communities,” said civil protection spokespersons after activating emergency protocols.
Response teams from both countries are maintaining preventive monitoring in border departments and provinces in view of the possibility of serious aftershocks in the coming hours.
