The national strike called by the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE) celebrated more than 20 days of social mobilization in rejection of the economic measures of the Daniel Noboa government, especially the elimination of the diesel subsidy and the increase of the Value Added Tax (VAT).

Protests have increased with greater tension in communities such as Imbabura and San Miguel del Colón, where acts of extreme violence and a reported excessive use of force by the authorities have been reported.

Local media and community centers denounce that the military uses the concept of a “humanitarian convoy” to enter rural areas and carry out interventions on private property, which has been described as a violation of individual guarantees by the Ecumenical Commission on Human Rights.

In a statement issued this Monday, the Commission noted that these actions constitute a sign of the “disproportionate use of force against citizens who exercise their rights of protest in accordance with the provisions of the Ecuadorian Constitution and international treaties.”
