Various political organizations, student federations and social movements from Ecuador mobilized massively this Wednesday to the headquarters of the National Electoral Council (CNE) in the capital. The demonstrators expressed a strong rejection of the recent advance of the sectional elections and the suspension of several organizations from the electoral register.

According to information detailed by Telesur, Ecuadorians described these measures as an “attack on democracy”, pointing out that such actions alter the planned schedule and limit citizen participation ahead of the next elections.

Social discontent was specifically focused on the management of the organization's president, Diana Atamaint, whose immediate resignation was the main slogan throughout the day. The mobilized sectors accuse the head of the CNE of violating fundamental democratic guarantees and of acting under an agenda aligned with the interests of the Executive.

According to the leaders of the protest, the lack of independence of the electoral referee jeopardizes the transparency of the process and weakens the country's institutionality at a critical time.

The day of protest, which took place under heavy police surveillance, marks the beginning of a series of legal and social actions that civil movements intend to take to reverse the CNE's resolutions.

Student and political representatives warned that they will not cease their mobilizations until respect for the right to participation is guaranteed and trust is restored in the Ecuadorian electoral system, demanding that the elections be held under conditions of fairness and strict adherence to the law.
