Last Thursday, the Congress of El Salvador approved a controversial constitutional reform that allows indefinite presidential re-election, as part of a proposal promoted by a “democratic” president, Nayib Bukele.
Called “express reform”, it not only enabled presidential re-election, for a six-year term in the Central American country, but it will also allow for the amendment of the Maga Charter to eliminate a second round of elections from the elections.
The Legislative Assembly of El Salvador, with a majority of Bukele's supporters, ratified the measure with 57 votes in favor, out of 60 in total, which modifies article 80 and eliminates the sanction that suspended citizen rights of those who promote presidential re-election.
Likewise, it promoted the amendment of Article 152 and abolished the clause that prohibited anyone who had held the Presidency for more than six months during the previous period or in the six months prior to the start of a new term of office from being a candidate.
