Faced with the recent threat of naval intimidation against Venezuela by Donald Trump, the former president of Colombia and former Secretary General of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), expressed his categorical rejection, warning that these actions ignore the peaceful nature of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Through a video, posted on his account on the social network X, Samper said that “Trump is unaware that this region has been recognized as a zone of peace. We have no nuclear weapons, no ethnic, religious or blood conflicts, much less territorial disputes over hegemonic pretensions such as those he has insinuated when he taxed Panama and now Venezuela.”
In response to this situation, the former president proposed the immediate convening of the South American Defense Council (CSD) of UNASUR, an instance that at the time established a ban on installing military bases on the border between Colombia and Venezuela, as a measure to preserve regional stability.
Samper reiterated his message to Donald Trump: “Please get your hands out of Venezuela.”
This call reinforces the region's historic commitment to peace, the self-determination of Peoples and respect for international law.
