Ethiopia began a momentous election day on Monday with the formal opening of voting centers throughout its territory to hold the country's seventh general elections. A robust register that exceeds 54 million registered voters, out of a population estimated at 130 million inhabitants, is mobilized for the purpose of electing its new representatives both in the House of People's Representatives and in regional state councils.
Since the early hours of the morning, large numbers of citizens were reported in the voting centers, a trend that was especially evident in the capital, Addis Ababa, reflecting a high level of citizenship and citizen participation. In this regard, the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) emphasized that the youth population and women constitute an extremely significant portion of the electorate, consolidating themselves as key actors in this electoral process.
The infrastructure set up for this day includes the provision of approximately 52,000 voting centers strategically distributed throughout the country to guarantee access to voting.
In the political field, the electoral contest stands out for its plurality, registering the active participation of 42 political parties and a total of 80 independent candidates who formally compete for the available seats.
The voting process will focus on a single day of activities, which is why the authorities ordered the preventive closure of most work and commercial spaces in order to facilitate the attendance of workers at the polls.
With this logistical and institutional deployment, the country seeks to ensure an orderly and transparent conduct of the elections, whose preliminary results will begin to be centralized once the official voting times are over.
