Pecadores del Estado Nueva Esparta is preparing to welcome the sardine season, one of the most important activities in the country, on March 15, 2026.
The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Juan Carlos Loyo, during a meeting with representatives of local fisheries committees, within the framework of the Monitoring Committee (COSE) for the sardine resource, highlighted the relevance of the date.
“Today we are here in Nueva Esparta because soon, on March 15, the start of the 2026 sardine fishing season. This is one of the most valuable resources for artisanal maritime fishing in Venezuela, due to the number of actors involved and because of its ecological and economic importance,” Loyo explained.
In 2025, the entity closed with a catch of approximately 5 thousand tons of sardines, due to the work of 1,500 fishermen distributed in 10 fishing ports and with the use of 74 chinchorros.
These figures reflect the magnitude of an activity characterized by the use of fishing gear that is less abrasive to the marine ecosystem.
