During his speech at the 79th Regular Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), the Minister of People's Power for Foreign Affairs, Yván Gil, denounced that the sanctions imposed by the United States seek to subdue the country through economic blockade and financial suffocation.
Gil recalled that March 9 marked ten years since the beginning of this aggression, which Washington calls “maximum pressure”, but which in reality constitutes “maximum calculated cruelty”. He noted that these coercive measures have caused economic losses of more than 642 billion dollars until 2022 and affect more than 30 million Venezuelans.
“For every measure that seeks to freeze a good, a service, a monetary value, a transaction, Venezuela will unleash a flood of new opportunities,” he said, highlighting the efforts of the People to overcome attempts at political, diplomatic and economic isolation. He also assured that, despite attempts at military invasion, sabotage, legal war (lawfare), and even assassination attempts, the country maintains political and social stability.
The foreign minister denounced the theft of Venezuelan assets, such as gold held in the Bank of England and refineries abroad, as examples of economic aggression.
Gil called for an end to sanctions and demanded justice: “Crimes committed for decades, based on the application of unilateral coercive measures, must cease and be duly tried.” He also urged the international community to break the cycle of impunity and to continue to denounce these policies in multilateral spaces. “This is not a miracle, but rather an effort and a consistent, coherent and well-designed policy,” he concluded.
