The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Colombia assured that the Government will go to international bodies to defend its sovereignty as a State, in the face of direct threats received from the United States government, which also offended President Gustavo Petro by linking him to drug trafficking.
In this regard, the Colombian Foreign Ministry, through this document, expresses that these accusations are baseless, while stressing that Petro “has always been characterized by his respect for democratic bodies and his frontal fight against drug trafficking.”
The statement also reiterates that these false allegations constitute a serious act and go against the dignity of the President of Colombians, “who has tirelessly led and fought drug trafficking in our country, achieving, in his years of government, the largest seizures of illegal drugs ever achieved in recent history, in addition to promoting a fight aimed at comprehensively eradicating the scourge of drugs throughout the region.”
It indicates that the communication received by the White House, “contains a direct threat to national sovereignty by proposing an illegal intervention in Colombian territory, a country that has historically been a valuable ally in the fight against drugs in the region and in the world. Such approaches violate all the rules of international law and diplomacy, and especially international treaties that protect the sovereignty, independence and self-determination of countries.”
The Government of Colombia also rejects the use of international cooperation as an instrument of interference in Colombia's internal affairs.
“Without cooperation, transnational organizations dedicated to the production and marketing of narcotics will win and the entire region will lose,” the document concludes.
