The government of the Portuguese state initiated a plan to channel rivers and build protective berms to avoid affecting historically vulnerable sectors during the winter.
The works are carried out through the Pipeline Plan and as part of a contingency plan that was activated with the arrival of the rains and the impact they have caused, especially in the upper area of the entity.
According to the Portuguese Socialist Infrastructure and Services Company (ESINSEP), the Chabasquencito rivers are currently being intervened, in Chabasquén (Unda); Sarare, in Agua Blanca; and Toco, in Ospino, according to the local press.
The president of the organization, Luis Azuaje, reported that the works are being carried out both in the upper area and in the flat sectors of Portuguesa, with special attention to the Chabasquencito River, in Chabasquén, because the protective wall was undermined by the rains of the first days of May and the streams overflowed, causing floods, damage to electrical and drinking water systems and landslides that affected the passage on the road that connects the municipality with Lara.
