The Haitian Journalists Association (AJH) formally denounced the kidnapping of communicators Junior Célestin, from Radio Telé Megastar, and Osnel Espérance, from Radio Uni FM, intercepted by armed gangs that maintain territorial control in the capital, Telesur said.
The incident occurred last Friday, March 13 in the vicinity of the Sylvio Cator football stadium, the union's statement details that the reporters were on a field job when they were approached by armed individuals.
So far, families and colleagues have received no sign of life, while alarming rumors about their physical integrity proliferate on social networks.
At a joint press conference held at the Community Development Center (CEDEC), Danielo Féquière, executive director of Radio Uni FM, and Genson Jean-Baptiste, representative of Radio Telé Megastar, demanded that the Haitian government open an in-depth and urgent investigation.
“Today we don't know if Espérance and Célestin are alive. We have no news from you,” said Féquière, who urged the captors to give a sign of life and called on law enforcement to take concrete measures to curb the impunity that plagues the country.
Journalistic work in the nation is critical. Since 2018, the security crisis has left at least 15 journalists killed, either as a result of the action of criminal groups or during operations by the National Police.
