On Monday, the National Congress of Honduras admitted a formal complaint for “serious performance in office” against the State Attorney General, Johel Zelaya. The measure, backed by 93 deputies, marks a historic milestone as it is the first time that the figure of impeachment has been activated to suspend a senior official in the country.

Following the decision, Zelaya has been temporarily removed from office, leaving the Public Ministry in charge of the Deputy Prosecutor, Marcio Cabañas.

The suspension is directly linked to the prosecutor's actions during the 2025 electoral process, which has been the subject of intense controversy. He is singled out for alleged irregularities and abuses of power that would have affected the transparency of the contest.

The process culminated in the victory of Nasry “Tito” Asfura, a candidate consolidating a political turnaround in the Central American nation that now seeks to audit the institutions of the previous period.

While a special commission of nine deputies is being formed to investigate the charges, Zelaya has stated through his social networks that he receives the news with “the serenity and peace of mind of having acted in accordance with the law”.

For his part, the president of the Legislature, Tomás Zambrano, announced that this could be the first of several revisions to officials of the outgoing administration, keeping political tension at a high level while defining the legal future of the now suspended prosecutor.
