The National Police of Honduras announced this Thursday the capture of three people who intended to assassinate
senior officials, including former President Manuel Zelaya Rosales, in order to cause panic in the population.

The institution indicated that these people were part of a major criminal plan, which included an attempt on the lives of Zelaya and other leaders.

In a statement, the Police explained that the operation made it possible to arrest those involved for punishable preparatory acts and terrorist association. According to the entity, the objective was to carry out murders during a demonstration by a specific group to generate terror and destabilize democratic coexistence.

If consummated, any attack would have seriously affected life, social peace and the democratic order of the country.

Those captured were identified as Arcadio Corrales Estrada, 64, a mechanic living in Tegucigalpa; Jesús Enamorado Paz, 69, a merchant from Comayagua; and Antonio David Kattán, 53, a merchant, from San Pedro Sula. The arrests were made in Tegucigalpa and Comayagua (center) and San Pedro Sula (north), in coordination with the Public Ministry (MP).

The Police indicated that the case remains under investigation, led by the MP, and that the detainees will be brought before the competent judicial authority for law enforcement. Honduras is currently campaigning for the general elections scheduled for November 30, and Zelaya Rosales is the national coordinator of the ruling Free Party.

It should be remembered that the former president was overthrown on June 28, 2009 by a coup d'etat, promoted by the Armed Forces and backed by the major parties of the right. Libre won the electoral victory on November 28, 2021, with Castro as the candidate, marking the first defeat of the right in the country's recent history
