Since its creation in 2006 and to date, the Sonrisa Mission has carried out more than 4 million rehabilitations, said the national oral health coordinator of the Ministry of Health, José Juan Delgado.
According to a press release from the Health portfolio, Delgado reported that this quarter of 2026, more than 50,000 dental visits have been carried out through this social care program.
“The Smile Mission restores lost parts and repairs damaged ones. If the person is edentulous or they are older adults who don't have any teeth, we manufacture their oral prostheses in the laboratories of our own headquarters. This is a unique benefit in the world, we have offices equipped with six dental chairs and a dental laboratory in the same place, all completely free of charge,” he explained.
The program also prioritizes children through the area of pediatric dentistry, allowing it to achieve a history of more than 90,000 visits to boys and girls, who undergo x-rays, surgical treatments, cleaning and surgery. He also added that the country is currently making progress in the development of approximately 250,000 dental prostheses.
The Smile Mission currently has 26 offices nationwide (23 fully operational and 3 in the process of being rehabilitated). Dr. Delgado explained that people can access the benefit in two ways: direct care, through assistance to mission headquarters, which are generally located in the main hospital of each state or through the 1×10 of Good Governance, a technological platform where the request is processed and an appointment is scheduled for the patient with the corresponding day, time and center.
