On Wednesday, the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran forced the withdrawal of the American destroyer USS Fitzgerald (DDG-62) after its approach to waters controlled by the Islamic Republic in the Sea of Oman.

The FARS news agency, a naval helicopter of the Persian Navy, flew over the destroyer and issued a warning to move away from the maritime area. In response, the American ship allegedly threatened to open fire on the aircraft. Despite this, the Iranian pilot continued his patrol and reiterated his warning to respect jurisdictional waters.

Regarding the stay of the warship, the Iranian army's air defense system intervened and transmitted a message of total support to the helicopter, demanding that the destroyer immediately change course to the south. Finally, the USS Fitzgerald left the area after the military intervention.

This new episode is part of a series of sustained tensions in the Gulf and Sea region of Oman, where Tehran faces the presence of foreign warships.

In June 2025, the Iranian Navy dissuaded the approach of a British destroyer in the Indian Ocean with a warning sent by combat drones, forcing the ship to retreat before reaching the Persian Gulf.
