The Italian government, headed by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, announced the suspension of the automatic renewal of the memorandum of collaboration on defense matters with Israel. During his speech at the "Vinitaly" wine forum in Verona, he justified this measure based on the instability of the “current situation” in the Middle East.

This change represents a break with the dynamics established since April 2016, when the agreement was configured as the main framework for military cooperation between the two nations.

Unlike the previous protocol, which guaranteed a tacit extension every five years, the Italian Executive has determined that any future extension must be evaluated in a timely and detailed manner.

This technical decision carries a significant symbolic burden, and is described by the Ministry of Defense as a deliberate “political gesture”. The holder of that portfolio, Guido Crosetto, has already formally communicated this new position to his Israeli counterpart, Israel Katz, marking a distance in the bilateral relationship.

The announcement comes in a climate of increasing diplomatic friction due to Israeli military operations in the region. Meloni has intensified his criticism of the Israeli authorities, especially after the recent incidents affecting Italian troops integrated into the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

Italy's questioning over the clarification of the shooting at a peace convoy has been the final trigger for this review of security agreements.

In short, the suspension of the automatic nature of the memorandum reflects a recalibration of Italian foreign policy in the face of the conflict. By conditioning military cooperation on constant evaluation, Rome seeks to exert diplomatic pressure and reaffirm its demand for respect for international peace missions.

This position places Italy in a position of active surveillance, prioritizes the security of its troops and regional stability over previously mechanized defense commitments.
