The Minister of Popular Power for Science and Technology, Gabriela Jiménez, reported on her Telegram channel that the Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research (IVIC) is carrying out a study on the vulnerability of the artisanal sardine fishing system to climate change in Falcón, Sucre and Nueva Esparta.
“This project generates information to understand the availability of sardines and their impact on food security,” he said.
The study, which has been under development for three years, analyzes the state of the populations, their possible future distribution and the conditions of the communities linked to this activity. One of the results indicates that 80% of the communities evaluated maintain food security associated with sardine fishing.
Jiménez said that the Bolivarian Government, through the Great Science, Technology and Innovation Mission Dr. Humberto Fernández-Morán and the Great Mother Earth Venezuela Mission, will continue to promote research that provides data for the management of the fishing system. “We will continue working so that science generates solutions,” he said.
