The executive secretary of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA-TCP), Jorge Arreaza, urged the population to be alert to “counter the smear campaign that exists against the country.”
In an interview with Venezolana de Televisión (VTV), he stated that the country fulfills the popular mandate to hold elections for governors, deputies and legislative councils in the 159,542 km² that the Esequibo territory represents. “Esequiba Guiana is the territory that Simon Bolivar, Antonio José de Sucre and all the Venezuelan heroes fought for,” he said.
In this regard, he added that “the Geneva Agreement of 1966 states that both parties Venezuela [United Kingdom] and now the Cooperative Republic of Guyana must sit down and seek a solution that would satisfy both parties. It's not easy, but they can't impose and deny historic territory to Venezuela under the pretext of keeping our country's resources.”
He added that “imperialism is a network of energy and pharmaceutical corporations, among others. They have their objectives. In the case of the Essequibo, ExxonMobil has a thirst for revenge, they want to generate a conflict and we will defend our territory.”
