Riot police fired tear gas grenades and live ammunition to suppress stone-throwing demonstrators in downtown Nairobi in the most widespread riots since at least three dozen people lost their lives.

Since last June 18, the demonstrations began with a peaceful tone, and they have been turning violent due to the interference of thugs, according to the conveners in the Kenyan capital and other cities of the country.

At least 39 people died and 361 others were injured in demonstrations against a tax hike in Kenya that have been shaking the country since June 18, the Kenyan National Human Rights Commission (KNCHR) reported.
