Magnitude 5.2 earthquake shakes central area and the capital of Guatemala

A magnitude 5.2 earthquake shook the central area of Guatemala on Tuesday, including the country's capital and with an epicenter in the department of Escuintla, the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology reported.


The brief report indicated that the epicenter of the earthquake was located 23 kilometers from the capital and 13 kilometers from its main tourist area, Antigua Guatemala.


According to the first reports from the city authorities, the seismic alarms were activated and numerous buildings were evacuated to protect their inhabitants, although so far no casualties or material damage have been reported.


The National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction of Guatemala (CONRED) confirmed these emergency evictions and published numerous photos of government employees and the general public gathered in squares and other safe places as a precautionary measure, the Sputnik agency reported.
