One of the greatest women in the history of the American continent, Manuela Sáenz, known as “the Knight of the Sun” and the “Liberator of the Liberator”, was born 226 years ago, who was a great fighter for the patriotic cause.

Daughter of Simón Sáenz Vergara, a Spaniard, and the Creole María Joaquina de Aizpuru, Manuelita Sáenz was born in Quito, Ecuador, on December 27, 1797.

Her mother —there is no historical certainty about this— died the day Manuela was born or, according to other versions, two years later, so the girl was given to the Convent of the Concepted Nuns (Royal Monastery of the Clean and Immaculate Conception), where she lived the first years of her life.

The “Liberator of the Liberator” is the embodiment of the struggle of millions of women for the cause of love and freedom. It is the expression of what it means to be Latin American, what women are in Latin America, the women in our history.

On a new anniversary of her birth and in the light of the processes that are taking place today in Latin America, it is not enough to remember Manuela as the simple sentimental companion of the Liberator Simon Bolivar, it is not enough to commemorate her birth or remember her death every year, Manuela must be a daily example of rebellion and resistance in the face of ignominy and betrayal.
