President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed Mexico's position in favor of Cuba, after the Undersecretary of State of the United States, Christopher Landau, questioned the Aztec vote in support of the Antillean nation in the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, which calls for an end to the commercial blockade against the island.

During a press conference, the president emphasized that the country's diplomatic conduct responds to its principles and reiterated that the relationship with Cuba is part of a path defined by sovereign decisions.

“By a very large majority, all countries asked that the blockade against Cuba no longer continue. We are a sovereign, free, independent country, and we Mexicans define foreign policy,” said Sheinbaum.

During the United Nations General Assembly held on October 29, 2025, 165 member States supported the resolution calling for an end to the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba. The vote also recorded 7 votes against and 12 abstentions.
