The Government of Mexico announced this Friday, October 24, that, according to the information they have, at least 10 compatriots have died during immigration operations or in the custody of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) since the beginning of the second term of the tycoon Donald Trump, on January 20.

This was announced at a press conference by the Undersecretary for North America of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), Roberto Velasco. The official said that Mexico has expressed its “indignation and concern” to the US Government over these ten cases, which are being followed up “on time” by instructions from the Mexican president, Claudia Sheinbaum.

“In each case, we send notes verbales to the U.S. Embassy in Mexico, in which we have requested that there be transparent, exhaustive investigations. We obviously demand that we get to the bottom of the causes that caused these very sensitive deaths,” Velasco explained.

According to Telesur, the Mexican Foreign Minister, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, indicated that the Mexican Government has sent thirteen diplomatic notes to the United States, where it has expressed disagreement with the measures and the treatment of migrants. “We are defending our compatriots, we are defending their rights. We don't agree with some of the actions that have been taken,” he said.

Velasco added that since the beginning of the Trump administration in January, 169 raids carried out by ICE have been known, in which 2,382 Mexicans were arrested. De la Fuente also stated that from January 20 to date, 116,320 migrants have been repatriated to Mexico, of whom 93,153 received consular assistance.

According to Roberto Velasco, the most recent of these cases occurred yesterday morning in San Bernardino, California, and the foreign ministry has already contacted the victim's daughter. In these cases, he said, there is a protocol to provide legal support to the families of the victims and to express both the condolences of the Mexican authorities and their “strong support.”

Regarding the cause of death of the 10 compatriots, Velasco indicated that “each case is different”, because while in some cases it was about diseases that became complicated, in others - such as one that occurred in Dallas, Texas - the deceased Mexican was shot by a shooter who was later killed, in turn, by ICE.

In Chicago, on the other hand, it was elements of that body that opened fire on the migrant, and it is presumed that in other cases the arrested Mexicans may have taken their own lives.

Velasco emphasized that we must be “careful with words” and not claim that Mexicans “died at the hands of ICE”, but “in their custody”, although this still implies the responsibility of U.S. immigration agents in what happened, so Mexico requires an exhaustive investigation into all cases, in order to identify those responsible.
