The Government of Javier Milei has developed a mechanism to transfer control of Argentine Water and Sanitation (AYSA) to private capital.
The company, responsible for the supply of water and the treatment of liquid waste in Buenos Aires and parts of the metropolitan area, will transfer 90% of its shares through a shared management model between tenders and public contracts.
The privatization initiative responds to a general strategy of the Government to reduce state intervention in the economy, similar to the policies established in the 90s under the impetus of privatization. Under the Basic Law, AySA and seven other public companies are considered “privatizable”, with the objective of reducing expenses and structuring a smaller State, according to a press release from Ciudad Caracas.
This decision is in addition to other privatizations already carried out by the neoliberal government of Milei, such as those of Energía Argentina (ENARSA), INTERCARGO, Corredores Viales and Belgrano Cargas , among others.
