To date, the Ministry of Popular Power for Ecosocialism (MINEC) has more than one million fruit, forest, ornamental and medicinal seeds collected in Anzoátegui from January to May.
Yamil Saleh, director of the Territorial Unit for Ecosocialism (UTEC) Anzoátegui, reported that the collection of these seeds took place over 117 days.
Saleh explained that seed collection days are part of actions aimed at conserving biological diversity in terms of flora, MINEC press reports.
He highlighted that 331.09 kg of seeds are forest species, 272.20 kg correspond to fruit species, 433.99 kg are ornamental species and 7.8 kg are medicinal plants.
“As a tropical country, Venezuela generates two periods of reproduction in the flora resource. One in the dry season and the other in the rainy season, in which we will be collecting genetic material to strengthen our germplasm banks and continue to reforest with our own,” he said.
He also specified that, in terms of floristics, Venezuela is among the countries with the highest number of species, with some 21 thousand plant species to date, a figure that, according to specialists, must be even higher due to the various geographical characteristics registered by the national territory.
Saleh emphasized that one of the priorities established by the Chuquisaca Plan is the execution of green infrastructure works for the reforestation of forests, degraded areas, hydrographic basins and green areas of cities using native Venezuelan species.
“In order to update our botanical inventories, the Chuquisaca Plan proposes to enhance our resources by reproducing seeds collected in the field in nurseries,” he said.
The seed collection day is supported by the National Park Institute (INPARQUES), the National Reforestation Company (CONARE), Misión Árbol, and public and private companies.
