The Bolivarian Government, through the Ministry of Popular Power of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Minesca), carried out a successful day of the national program “Fish Your Plastic” in the waters of the Morrocoy National Park, on February 23 and 24.

The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Juan Carlos Loyo, highlighted that 380 fishing boats have been collected from fishermen and women, from tourist service providers. “This Pesca Tu Plastico plan was born with the fisherman's awareness that to that sea and that river, from which he extracts the protein for his livelihood, must also be returned,” he said.

“The fisherman plays a very important role because the greatest impact comes along the mangroves, areas rarely reviewed during cleaning days; that's where the boat arrives, collects the plastic and that's where the awareness campaign comes out,” he explained.

This massive action, which is part of policies to protect the marine-coastal ecosystem, achieved a historic collection figure of 10,000 kilograms (10 tons) of polluting material, far exceeding initial expectations, after the Carnival holidays.

The day was attended by 10 Councils of the Popular Power of Fishermen and Fishermen, Aquaculturists and Aquaculturists (CONPPAS) from the region, who deployed a fleet of boats reaffirming their role as the main guardians of territorial waters. The tourism sector was strategically added to this effort, with the presence of Minister Daniela Cabello, the association of bouncers, members of the Bolivarian National Guard (GNB) and park rangers.

To achieve the sanitation of critical areas such as Playa Los Juanes, a systematic method was implemented that resulted in the extraction of 100 industrial bags of solid waste.
