In the framework of the International Telecommunications Fair FITELVEN 2025, the Minister of People's Power for Electric Energy and director of the Venezuelan National Telecommunications Commission (CONATEL), Jorge Márquez, highlighted an impressive increase of 343% in fiber optic transport networks and 234% in access networks, fundamental bases for improving Internet capacity and speed in the country.
The data were presented by Márquez during the second day of FITELVEN 2025, when he gave the conference "Boosting Growth. Balance and New Challenges”, and publicize the National Telecommunications Plan 2025-2031, which seeks a telecommunications model that promotes technological advancement, social innovation and productive development. He also took stock of the achievements achieved with the Plan 2022 - 2025.
Making an extraordinary assessment of the sector with figures that reflect unprecedented growth, he pointed out that the migration to Optical Fiber to the Home (FTTH) grew by 288%, and the fixed Internet added 2.8 million new users, reaching more than 17 million connected Venezuelans.
In the mobile field, the deployment of 4G registered a jump of 92.2%, with almost 2 million new users, and mobile Internet subscribers increased by 51.1%. “We come from very difficult times and we managed to lift up our companies,” said Márquez.
Regarding the National Telecommunications Plan 2025-2031, Márquez announced that the plan is structured in 4 key axes: the first, Wired Infrastructure: Massive Fiber Optic Deployment (FTTH); the second, Wireless Infrastructure: Expansion of 4G coverage and preparation for 5G; thirdly, Sustainable Digital Transformation: Promoting AI and Smart Cities and fourth, Citizen Participation: Strengthening Government-People communication.
Among the immediate goals, it will seek to connect the 23 “dark spots” (areas without internet) before the end of the year. In addition, he announced that the National Interconnection Point (IXP) is already active in its first phase.
Márquez called on entrepreneurs to “think big” and be part of this great technological leap, with projects such as a national data center and the expansion of connectivity to Guiana Essequiba as a strategic hub.
He also stressed that “we managed to unite families and communities scattered throughout the national territory. We have succeeded in facilitating access to education, health, culture and sports.”
He expressed special thanks to the international delegations of Colombia, Brazil, Mexico and other countries, because “now we are a great team.”
