To improve the health of the people of Merida, the Miracle Mission together with the Government of Mérida benefited 200 patients with the fourth day of cataract surgery this year 2024, which took place in the operating rooms of the Venezuelan outpatient clinic located in the Libertador municipality (Mérida).

This Thursday, 140 cataract surgeries were performed with comprehensive care, and different studies have been granted free of charge, said Luis Paredes, commissioner of ophthalmology of the Government of Mérida.

He explained that in the “Hugo Chávez” Ophthalmology and Optometry Unit, located in the Long Stay Unit (ULE) in the city of Mérida, tests such as eye ultrasound, eye biometry, refraction and visual acuity are performed on pre- and post-operative patients.

He explained, according to a review in the newspaper Última Noticias, that cataract operations are more complex, requiring more specific evaluations and supplies. This pathology has a higher incidence in older adults, “because our older adults are accompanied with comprehensive care”.

He added that since 2022, when the Miracles Mission was activated in the state of Mérida, to date, 2,567 surgeries have been performed in the state of Mérida, and during this year 2024, 564 surgeries have been registered.

For his part, Governor Jehyson Guzmán thanked the Bolivarian Government for the support of the supplies and medical links to provide benefits to the people of Merida.

Guzmán reflected that tests for eye diseases are expensive, the cheapest in the private market costs between 60 and 70 dollars, they even exceed more than 100 dollars, while the “Hugo Chávez” Ophthalmology and Optometry Unit are free.
