During these Carnivals 2025, more than 1,000 people gathered in the town of Naiguatá, La Guaira state, to attend the traditional Burial of the Sardine procession, one of the most deeply rooted cultural festivities in the Venezuelan coastal region.
According to information from Venezolana de Televisión, this year's edition stood out for its color, irreverence and the mix of humor and rituality, which have made this demonstration a unique event in the country.
One of the promoters of this tradition and resident of the town of Naiguatá, Ramón Alfredo Quintero Berroterán, highlighted the pride of being part of this cultural expression.
“It's one of the greatest traditions in Naiguatá Parish. It is a source of pride for us Venezuelans and I thank everyone who joins every year,” he said.
He also stressed that “the participation of farmers and fishermen is essential because with this tradition we thank the sea, the land and the work of man all year round. It's a party that unites us and that has been passed down from generation to generation.”
The Burial of the Sardine is a parade in the best parody style, in which the locals symbolically say goodbye to the excesses of carnival and welcome Lent. However, unlike other religious rites, in Naiguatá the day is marked by humor, mischief and satire.
